To Foreign Applicants

Masuda lab participates in the Open Systems Management Program within the framework of International Graduate Programs at the Graduate School of Sci. & Tech., Keio University. Applicants should have solid background in quantitative methods (optimization, probability and/or applied mathematics), in particular working knowledge of quantitative methods.
We emphasize both methodologies and applications. Our methodologies are microeconomics, stochastic modeling, game theory, and optimization. Our applications are largely classified as Management Science, in particular, pricing problems such as congestion pricing and auction. Also we discuss the pricing as a coordination mechanism in supply chains. Our approach is theoretical rather than empirical.
There are two types of activities in our lab: 1) reading circle (2 or 3 times a week for grad students) and 2) seminar presentation. All first year graduate students in Masuda lab (and some 4th year undergrad students) participate in the reading circle. Here are some of the books we used in the reading circle in the past.
・A. Mas-Colell, M.D. Whinston, J.R. Green, Microeconomic Theory
・D. Fudenberg and J. Tirole, Game Theory
・V. Krishna, Auction Theory
・K.T. Talluri and G.J. Van Ryzin, Theory and Practice of Revenue Management
・S.M. Ross, Stochastic Processes
・J.M. Ortega and W.C. Rheinboldt, Iterative Solution of Nonlinear Equations in Several Variables
Those who think Masuda lab a serious alternative should browse at least some of the books above to see what is going on in the reading circle. Second year grad students (and some first year students) give seminar presentation for their thesis research. The presentation may be weekly or bi-weekly depending on his progress.
